Chapter 10

Marcus

I’m still regretting the way I talked to her the next morning. It was sweet of her to come give Alex her jacket when she saw he was cold. I was staring so hard at the cops and firemen who were rushing around in the darkness trying to figure out if this was another fire set by the arsonist to even notice. She scared me when she came bopping up to us like it was no big thing, but not everyone would bring a jacket over for a kid. She’s the only one who did and we’ve lived there for a year and a half now.

After feeding Alex pancakes I tell him I have an idea and I need his help. He’s eager to help, not even knowing what it is, and once I fully explain he’s even more excited.

“Daddy, that’s the best idea ever!” he shouts, his voice reaching a decibel level only dogs can hear.

Chuckling, I ruffle his hair. “I think so too buddy. Go get your paper and markers okay?”

He runs off to do what I’ve asked and I try to decide how I’m going to word this. I haven’t participated in the paper writing fiasco up to this point, and I’m not sure what I want to say. I know I was a dick last night and I want to make it up to her, now I just have to figure out how.

By the time Alex comes running back to me with his supplies, I think I have the bare bones of a plan in mind. He hands me a sheet of paper and spills the markers all over the coffee table before taking a seat on the floor across from where I’m kneeling.

We both write down our thoughts for Clare, and when we’re done there’s just one other thing we need to do before we try to get her attention.

After a quick run to the florist, I let Alex go check the window and he comes back smiling. “She’s in the kitchen, Daddy. I can see her!” He doesn’t wait for a reply before running back to try to get her attention.

I watch as he stands in front of the window waving his arms and yelling like he thinks she can hear him. It takes maybe five minutes before he stops and waves so I know she’s seen him.

Alex holds up his first sign once he has her attention and I wish I could see her face.

He’s got multiple signs to show her. I just hope he’s able to keep her attention. She’s sweet enough to stay until he’s done though, at least I think she is.

My daddy says thanks too!

Will you…

Once he shows the last one, it’s my turn. I walk over to stand beside him and watch as her eyes widen when I crouch down so I’m on his level. I hand him the next to last sign and wait for her response.

Can we come see you?

Clare shuts her eyes and I can see the indecision plain on her face.
